The scale of everything around him was so alarming that Dante was glad he was already seated, or else he might have fallen down. The ground was hard rock, and rather dusty. Not his preferred choice of seat. But he thought it best to stay there for the time being.
"What is this place?"
"Unless that dragon deceived us," Cally said, "I would say it's the Worldsea."
"It doesn't look like any ocean I've ever seen."
"I think that's just a name."
"Oh shit!"
Cally jerked up his arms, scanning the skies about them. "What is it?"
"Daris sent us here to go to the Kala Ben Haim. But he forgot to mention how we're supposed to find it."
"Oh." Cally was still looking around, but he got a lot more relaxed about it. "And by the look of things, this place is very huge and very deserted."
Dante turned in a circle. He cupped his hands to his mouth. "Daris? Daris! Are you there?" His voice echoed from the nearer structures, but died out in the emptiness. "This is a disaster. How are we going to find the Kala now?"
"You know, I don't think we have to worry about that."
"Yes? Have you decided we're better off finding a portal away from the worlds of Rale after all?"
"The dragon is not as dumb as he looks."
Dante turned, baffled by this. Cally was pointing up at the sky. Though it wasn't nighttimeâand despite the fact he wasn't even sure there was a sky, as whatever it was that was up there looked like it could actually be the distant ceiling of the templeâa set of stars hung there in the air.
The same set of stars they had just flown into a minute before.
"The sign of Daris," Dante said. "All right, we might not be lost after all. But we don't know that Daris can keep it up foreverâor that Nolost, if he can see it, won't bring it down. If that happens, let's make sure we don't lose our bearings."
They couldn't rely on the sun for that, either, given that there wasn't one. But it was simple enough to smudge his blood on the wall of one of the gigantic stone blocks, walk in the direction of Daris for a couple of minutes, then dab some more blood on a wall there. In this way, he formed a line within his mind, and all he had to do was make sure they advanced in alignment with that line.
"I do not like this place," Dante said. "In fact, if I was a dead person being sent here for my final resting place, I would ask to be sent somewhere else. Loudly."
"You've only seen the slightest scrap of it, it could get better," Cally said. "Though by the look of things, there aren't any people here. Just us."
"They have to be somewhere. And someone had to build these things."
"Build? They look like solid stone to me."
"Carving them right out of the rock would have involved even more blood and sweat than stacking stones on top of each other.
